Randall K. Cooper High School National Honor Society Bylaws

Article VIII

Section 1:  Each student shall meet minimum requirements to maintain membership for NHS:

a.       Attain a minimum GPA of 3.500 for admission and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.400 for all semesters of membership. This GPA can be weighted as it is the same GPA used for graduation.

Accumulate 10 points of service per semester and submit the signed service hours form within 7 calendar days of the performed service. Five (5) points MAXIMUM can be accumulated at any one activity/location. ONLY up to five (5) points can be earned through service related to any school or held at a school although school service is not required. Members will effectively volunteer in three (2) different activities/locations to satisfy the hours requirement.  At least 5 points must be within a community service agency, e.g. Master Provisions, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Fairhaven Rescue mission, Cystic Fibrosis Walk, Adopt a Highway, helping with a charity organization or homeless shelter, and any other organization that does not give compensation of any kind.
* Documentation: Community Service out of school service must be documented on a letter (handwritten or typed) with organization letterhead. This letter must be signed by a supervisor and include a contact phone number. Double-dipping is NOT allowed with other honor societies.

b.   Hours of service performed during the summer cannot count toward the hour requirement for spring semester because the service has not yet been performed and the hours must be completed prior to the last day of school. Hours completed between 1 and 7 days before school service, plus selected OFFICIAL school activities, can count towards fall semester service totals.

Service hours are awarded as follows:

 5 points-mission trip

1-5  points—every hour volunteered at “super service locations” counts as one point toward service requirement. Every hour volunteered at “simple service locations” counts as ½ a point.

1 point-blood donations (maximum 1 point per semester/counts toward school points if given at a school)

½ point- Per meeting attendance

c.       Maintain the high standards of character and leadership that won them selection.

d.      Attend chapter meetings regularly.

e.      Participate in at least one chapter sponsored service activity per semester.

f.       Pay dues as determined each year by the appropriate deadline, and pay for graduation honor stoles by the appropriate deadline. If member is experiencing financial hardship, (s)he is required to discuss the terms of such hardship with the adviser and/or treasurer prior to deadline to determine an appropriate plan of action.

g.       Any other requirements deemed appropriate by the adviser and/or faculty council.

Article X

Section 2:  Each member shall be held responsible for his/her actions and will be disciplined and/or dismissed from membership according to the following guidelines.

a.       Failure to fulfill any of the requirements for membership will automatically result in a probation period for the next grading period (9 weeks). Failure to improve or correct during the probation period will result in termination of membership, which cannot be reinstated for any reason. If placed on probation for failing to meet the service hour requirements for any given semester, member will be required to complete those service hours in addition to the regular service hour requirement of the probationary semester.

b. Members who are on probation for more than two semesters will have membership status terminated.

c.   Students are advised to attend monthly meetings. If the students attend monthly meetings, ½ a point of service will be awarded per meeting. If a student must miss a monthly meeting, the student will not be awarded the ½ point. The student is also responsible to ask a NHS officer what was missed during the meeting within 3 school days.

d.   Students are required to participate in Cooper's mandatory service projects. If the member fails to fulfill this obligation fully or on time, then the member must seek a 3rd location and activity as an individual service project to complete within 1 week of the original service project date. This service must be performed at a totally different location and as a different activity than the member's regular 10 points of service. Failure to complete this service will result in probation.

e.    Any flagrant violation of membership requirements, academic dishonesty, severe disrespect of a faculty/staff member, drug use, level IV violation of school rules, or violation of public laws will result in an immediate hearing with the faculty council and probable revocation of membership. This includes violations posted openly on public networking websites.

Article XI

Section 1: Each member shall follow the established voting procedures for electing officers, which are outlined here. These procedures can only be change by a vote of the faculty council.

a.       All members who wish to vote must be present to have their vote counted.

b.      At least 80% of the membership body must be present for the vote to be official.

c.       Nominated officers must receive at least 50% plus one vote of the attending members to gain an office.

d.      Membership body must be silent during voting with the exception of the secretary calling roll and the chapter adviser.

e.      Several members may vote at a time as long as they are separated by distance and may not see each other’s votes. Votes will be deposited into an opaque box and counted immediately after official voting by chapter adviser.

f.        In the case of a tie or a non-majority winner, re-voting may occur, or nominated officers may relinquish their nomination and thereby break the tie.
